K'inich janaab pakal
K'inich Janaab Pakal was one of the greatest Mayan leaders. He was also known as Pacal the Great or Sun Sheild. Pakal lived from March 603 until August 683, and inherited the throne from his mother in July of 615 when he was 12, ruling until he died.
Pacal's Tomb
The discovery of this tomb has been one of the greatest in the Maya World. The tomb was found in 1952 by Alberto Ruz Lhuillier inside the Temple of Inscriptions. The temple is no longer open for visits, but there are replicas like the one in this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxeCVOqY5ng. The picture below features the lid of K'inich Janaab Pakal's tomb lid. The frame strip represents heaven, and the entire picture enacting Pakal's death and his fall to the underworld. One corner contains akbaal(darkness o night) and kin(sunshine or day) in the opposite corner. For more information on this tomb lid and the entire tomb of Pacal the Great, visit http://www.delange.org/PalenqueTomb/PalenqueTomb.htm. |

K'inich Janaab Pakal was also responsible for the expansion of Palenque and some great architectural buildings.
